Countdown to “I Do”: Part Four
Countdown to “I Do”: Part Four
So I told you all I wanted simple in terms of my wedding, right?
Well, Thursday, July 24th was the big day, and since we are well into our honeymoon now I can officially drop the big reveal: We eloped in Amsterdam!
I should warn you that I am writing this post ahead of time and scheduled it to go up before we even left, so I can’t yet share any pictures of our big day. That will have to wait until we get home. But I did want to share a little bit about what prompted our decision to marry abroad and how the planning for that decision all worked out.
Like I said already, I have been to a lot of weddings. And in the end, when I really thought about it, I knew that I didn’t want to do that big wedding thing. It wasn’t for us.
So marrying abroad really offered up the opportunity for us to do things our own way and to veer away from planning a traditional wedding and reception.
This gave us the chance to keep things small and unique to us and still get great photos!
Originally, we wanted to get married in Brugge, Belgium. But the more research we did, the more expensive and difficult to plan we realized those nuptials would be. So we adjusted our expectations and landed on Amsterdam, for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it was a locale we already knew we wanted to visit, and the planning was much more accessible for us via e-mail and over the web.
Along those lines, we definitely hired a wedding planner located in Amsterdam. It’s like I have told you all so many times before when discussing destination weddings; it really is so smart to have someone on hand at the location to handle all those tiny details that are so much more difficult to arrange from thousands of miles away. There is just peace of mind to knowing you have a local expert on your side to make sure everything runs smoothly and that everything you wanted or hoped for comes to fruition.
Amsterdam really is an incredible location and we are beyond excited to be eloping there, but really – the ceremony and the pictures are what mattered the most to us. Which is why we went the route of hiring a wedding planner, and also why we put such thought into whom our photographer would be. I already knew our photographer from a Facebook group we are both is, and we really liked the pictures we saw, plus she lives in Amsterdam so in the end – that was the direction we decided to go. I’m still beyond excited to see what the final results from our day will be!
Something else that makes our wedding a little more unique is that we didn’t invite any guests. We decided to really make this wedding just about us. Our love and our commitment to each other. We already had a trip planned around what turned out to be the perfect time, so it just made sense to us to combine our wedding and honeymoon and make this wedding about celebrating our love as a couple.
Don’t worry though; we will be having a very small reception when we get home so that our closest friends and family can celebrate with us as well.
But to me, this is the perfect wedding. You all know how much I love travel anyway, so the idea of running off with the man I love to some foreign country to exchange our “I Do’s” as a pair felt pretty special to me.
After all, I’ve been to hundreds of big weddings. But this? This is something I can say I’ve never seen before!
